THE body of a 30-year-old man has been recovered after a boat capsized off the coast in Co Galway.
The incident was reported to the Irish Coast Guard after a distress call was made from a boat at around 2.50am this morning.
The boat is believed to have capsized, according to The Irish Times.
The reports stated that three men were in the water at Ceann Mhasa.
It is understood that two of the men managed to make it ashore.
Unfortunately, the body of the third man was recovered along the shoreline shortly before 8am.
He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The coroner has been notified.
The deceased man has been taken to the mortuary at University Hospital Galway, where a post-mortem will be performed.
RTE reports that it was understood that the three men in their 30s were visiting the area from Norway.
They were returning from Roundstone last night when their boat was capsized.
Irish Coast Guard rescue helicopters R115 and R117 from Shannon and Waterford were tasked to the scene, along with the Clifden and Aran Islands lifeboat and Costelloe Bay and Cleggan coast guard units.
The spokesperson from An Garda Siochana said: “Gardai and the Coast Guard were alerted after a boat carrying three men encountered trouble off the coast of County Galway, north of St. Macdara’s Island, shortly before 3am on Saturday, 16th May 2026.
“Two crew members managed to make it safely to shore unharmed, while the Coast Guard continued searching for the third individual.
“Shortly before 8am the body of a male aged 30 was subsequently recovered along the shoreline.
“He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
“The coroner has been notified and the deceased has been removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Galway (UHG), where a post-mortem examination will be arranged.”
The Irish Sun has contacted the Irish Coast Guard for a statement.
