Sarah Abo Welcomes Her First Child — Finally Sharing the Name She and Cyrus Moran Waited So Long to Say

For Sarah Abo and her husband Cyrus Moran, it was the moment they had dreamed of through years of hope, heartbreak and uncertainty.

The Today host has welcomed the couple’s first child, a baby boy named Sonny, sharing the joyful news with a series of intimate black-and-white photographs from hospital and an emotional message celebrating the beginning of their family’s new chapter.

“Hi there, you can call me Sonny”

Announcing the birth on Instagram, Sarah introduced her newborn son with a simple but heartwarming caption.

“Hi there, you can call me Sonny.”

She revealed that Sonny arrived a little earlier than expected, but said the early arrival simply meant they had even more time to cherish every precious moment together.

“What a week with our little man. He came into the world a little early but that gave us a little longer to marvel at you, our beautiful boy. We love you so infinitely, darling.”

The post was accompanied by touching family photos showing Sarah and Cyrus cradling their son during their hospital stay.

Grateful for the Care That Got Them Here

Sarah also paid tribute to the doctors, nurses and midwives who cared for the family during what she described as a two-week hospital stay.

“Thank you for taking such good care of us. You are all angels and we are forever grateful.”

One photo captured a light-hearted family moment, with baby Sonny wrapped in a Sydney Swans scarf while his parents watched a football match on a laptop—an early introduction to one of Australia’s favourite pastimes.

A Special Return to Today

Just hours after announcing Sonny’s arrival, Sarah made a surprise appearance via video link on Today, giving viewers their first glimpse of the newborn.

Introduced by Sylvia Jeffreys as a “special surprise guest”, Sarah laughed that Sonny had been “in a bit of a mood” before having a feed, but was happily settled by the time he made his television debut.

Her colleagues celebrated the long-awaited milestone after following Sarah’s pregnancy journey throughout the year.

A Pregnancy That Took an Unexpected Turn

Sonny’s arrival comes after Sarah was forced to begin maternity leave earlier than planned due to pregnancy complications.

Earlier this month, she revealed she had developed high blood pressure and had been in and out of hospital while doctors closely monitored both mother and baby.

Despite the frightening setback, Sarah reassured viewers that they were receiving exceptional medical care before doctors advised her to remain on bed rest for the remainder of her pregnancy.

Unable to return to Today to farewell viewers before maternity leave, she apologised to audiences, saying the change had happened far more suddenly than she expected.

A Journey Shaped by Loss, Hope and Resilience

When Sarah announced her pregnancy live on Today in March, the moment was filled with emotion.

She revealed that she and Cyrus had endured two heartbreaking miscarriages before finally expecting their first child.

Speaking openly about the difficult road to parenthood, Sarah admitted she approached the pregnancy with what she called “cautious optimism”, knowing firsthand how fragile hope can feel after loss.

She chose to share her fertility journey publicly in the hope that other families facing similar challenges would feel less alone.

A New Beginning

For Sarah and Cyrus, Sonny’s arrival marks far more than the birth of their first child.

After years of heartbreak, uncertainty and an unexpected health scare during pregnancy, the couple have finally reached the moment they had long hoped for—a new beginning with the little boy they had waited so patiently to meet.

As Sarah’s heartfelt message made clear, every challenge along the way has only made this chapter feel even more precious.
