Michaela Strachan Opens Up About Off-Screen Feuds and Brave Health Battle: “I Thought It Could Be Cancer”

For over two decades, Michaela Strachan and Chris Packham have been the beloved faces of Springwatch, captivating viewers with their undeniable on-screen chemistry. But behind the cameras, 60-year-old Strachan admits that the relationship with her 65-year-old co-presenter has sometimes been anything but peaceful.

“We have heated debates because Chris is the scientific one, and I am the soft underbelly of wildlife television,” Strachan confessed. She recalled one particularly fiery argument that left the young researchers watching in awe. “I thought these two were friends, and now they’re really fighting!”

Strachan’s openness doesn’t stop at office tensions. The presenter recently revealed a terrifying second health scare, 12 years after her breast cancer battle. During a live broadcast, observant viewers noticed a lump on her throat—a discovery that prompted urgent tests. “I thought, ‘Oh my God, I do—I’ve got a lump,’” she recalled. With swift action from the production team, she was seen by specialists in Harley Street.Michaela Strachan: My life in travel | The Independent | The Independent

Fortunately, the lump was a benign cyst that could be safely drained. But the experience reignited Strachan’s appreciation for life and health, especially as she faced it quietly while a friend battled brain cancer. The ordeal also reminded her of the strength she had drawn from her first cancer journey. Opting for a double mastectomy after consulting a friend who had faced similar challenges, Strachan chose peace of mind over lingering fear.

Now living in South Africa with her partner, film director Nick Chevallier, and their 20-year-old son Oliver, Strachan remains candid about life’s battles—both on-screen and off. “These experiences, the debates, the scares—they all make you stronger,” she reflected. And after every test and every argument, she emerges resilient, humorous, and deeply human—a testament to the courage and heart that has kept audiences captivated for decades.
