Lisa Harrow: The Beginning of a New Chapter

Sam Neill met New Zealand actress Lisa Harrow in 1980 while filming Omen III: The Final Conflict, where the pair starred opposite one another.

Their relationship soon blossomed, and in 1983 they welcomed their son, Tim Neill. Although they eventually separated in 1989, Lisa remained an important part of Neill’s early adult life.

A celebrated performer in her own right, Harrow built an acclaimed career on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company and appeared in numerous film and television productions, earning widespread respect throughout the industry.

Noriko Watanabe: Nearly Three Decades of Family Life

Later in 1989, while filming the thriller Dead Calm, Neill met Japanese makeup artist Noriko Watanabe—a meeting that would become one of the defining relationships of his life.

Recalling their first encounter years later, Neill joked that he had “leapt out in pursuit of her” during filming before eventually winning her heart.

The couple married in September 1989 and welcomed their daughter, Elena, in 1991. Neill also embraced the role of father to Maiko, Noriko’s daughter from a previous marriage.

While raising their family together, Watanabe established herself as one of the film industry’s most respected makeup artists, contributing to productions including My Best Friend’s Wedding and Memoirs of a Geisha.

Their marriage lasted almost 30 years before they quietly separated in 2017—a remarkable chapter that remained one of the longest and most significant periods of Neill’s personal life.

Laura Tingle: A Quiet Love Later in Life

Following the end of his marriage, Neill found companionship with respected Australian journalist Laura Tingle.

Their relationship became public in early 2018, though both were intensely private and rarely spoke about their time together.

The couple parted ways in 2021, but there was clearly enduring respect between them. In his 2023 memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, Neill reflected warmly on their relationship, writing that they had shared “three wonderful years” together and expressing gratitude for that period of his life.

Following Neill’s passing, Tingle offered one of the most heartfelt insights into his final years, revealing that the actor had spent years courageously battling multiple forms of cancer. She explained that although he had overcome blood cancer, years of chemotherapy and immunotherapy had taken a heavy toll on his body and immune system.

A Life Rich in Love, Family and Gratitude

In the later years of his life, Neill often described himself as “a solitary single man” and said he had no plans to marry again.

Instead, he found happiness at his beloved Two Paddocks vineyard in New Zealand, surrounded by family, friends and the peaceful rural life he cherished.
