Former Sunrise host Sam Armytage has addressed growing speculation that she could be heading to the Today desk, while also sharing warm words of support for former co-host Karl Stefanovic following his departure from Nine.
Her comments come as the network continues its search for a new face to lead the breakfast program.

Sam Speaks Out on Today Role Speculation
With reports linking Armytage to the vacant Today co-host chair, the television presenter stopped short of confirming any move to Nine’s flagship breakfast show.
While admitting breakfast television remains close to her heart, she stressed that no permanent role has been offered.
“I love breakfast TV. I’ve done it for a long time. I know how to do it, I enjoy it, and I’m doing some fill-in stuff coming up, which will be great,” she said.
She added:
“But there is no job offered.”
Her remarks are likely to fuel further speculation as Nine continues testing potential hosting combinations in the coming weeks.
A Message of Support for Karl Stefanovic
Armytage also spoke positively about Stefanovic, who recently left Nine after the controversy surrounding his interview with British far-right activist Tommy Robinson on his independent podcast.
Rather than dwelling on the circumstances of his exit, she praised his broadcasting ability and wished him success in his next venture.
“I wish him well with his new project. He’s in his 50s now. I think your life changes in your 50s. You start thinking differently.”
Reflecting on her own experience working for a television network, Armytage suggested reaching a new stage of life can lead people to seek different opportunities.
“When you work for a network for a long time… there’s a lot of familiarity in that and you look for something else perhaps. So I salute him.”
Nine Continues Testing New Faces
Armytage is reportedly among several experienced presenters being considered as Nine reshapes the Today line-up.
She and fellow broadcaster Sylvia Jeffreys are both expected to appear as guest co-hosts while the network evaluates its long-term options.
The search has taken on added urgency, with Stefanovic’s departure leaving a permanent vacancy and co-host Sarah Abo preparing to begin maternity leave.
According to reports, Nine is also reviewing other parts of the presenting team, including the newsreader position, as it considers a broader refresh of the breakfast show.
Questions Still Surround Today’s Future
While several female presenters are believed to be under consideration, reports suggest identifying a permanent male co-host has proven more challenging.
The network is expected to use the coming months to trial different on-air partnerships before making any long-term decisions.
For now, Armytage has made one thing clear: despite the rumours, she has not accepted a permanent role—leaving plenty of questions about who will ultimately lead Today into its next chapter.
